Brush and Ink Fundamentals

This 5 week course offers introductory techniques and methods for exploring the expressive capabilities of the ink and brush medium while building upon foundational principles and techniques in drawing and painting, including line and pattern, colour layering, and various brush applications. We will approach a variety of subjects such as landscape, still-life, portraiture, and abstraction. This course is open to artists of all skill levels who want to develop creatively in a supportive environment where individual expression is highly encouraged. 

Syllabus

  • Brush and ink — exploring washes and expressive line
  • Mixed media and exploring pattern and texture
  • Depicting the human form with gestural marks
  • Representing landscape with coloured ink
  • Explorations in colour abstraction

Supplies

Required Supplies

  • 2 bamboo brushes
  • Bottle of permanent black India or Sumi ink — Yasutomo is a recommended brand
  • Small set of coloured pigmented inks — Look for sets that come with droppers on the lids
  • Recommended brands are Winsor & Newton, Dr. Ph. Martin Bombay, Speedball, and Sennelier
  • Set of fountain pen nibs and holder
  • Masking tape
  • 1 roll or package of rice paper (sometimes called Calligraphy paper or Japanese Calligraphy paper) Most brands are around $20 a package
  • 1 pad of Bristol board or mixed-media paper (9x12) 

Optional supplies

  • One sable watercolour brush (size 4)
  • One dagger watercolour brush (any size)
