Intro to Fused Glass

$240 plus $150 for glass supplies
Prerequisite: None

In this introductory class, students will gain elementary knowledge of kiln-formed glass. Participants will learn the basics of glass fusing, and work with a variety of glass materials. The elementary knowledge of kiln-formed glass will include fundamental fusing terminology, techniques, and principles as well as an introduction to glass fusing equipment and firing schedules. Each student will complete one-of-a-kind pieces of art. The completed fired pieces will be available for pick-up the following week.

Syllabus

  • Overview of what fused glass is and what to expect from the class
  • Safety tips for working with glass
  • Learn about different types of glass (sheet glass, frit, stringers)
  • Learn about the basic tools used
  • Basic glass cutting: practicing straight cuts
  • Simple project: Create a small, flat glass piece with basic shapes
  • Understanding different types of glass: COE, and compatibility
  • Practice cutting shapes like circles and triangles
  • Learn about how to prepare and care for glass molds
  • Project: Make a colorful glass coaster or small sun catcher using simple shapes
  • Learn how to stack and layer glass to create
  • Place glass pieces on top of each other or next to each other to create either soft or hard lines
  • Simple project: Create a layered glass pendant or small tile
  • Understand the fusing process and how to finish your piece
  • Introduction to kiln operation: setting up, programming, and maintaining
  • Understanding firing schedules: full fuse, tack fuse, and slump
  • Troubleshooting common issues in glass fusing
  • Work on a simple final project using the skills learned (e.g., a small plate or decorative piece)
  • Share your final piece and reflect on what you’ve learned over the course

Supplies

The materials fee includes glass and other materials and the use of tools. Students should also bring:

  • Blank paper
  • Ruler
  • Pencil & eraser
  • 2-3 fine tip colour markers
  • Straight edge scissors
  • Paper towel
  • Glass cleaner
  • Safety glasses
