Intro to Metal Arts

5 weeks: May 1 to May 29
Location: In-person Williams Building room 117
$240 plus $150 materials and $150 tools
Prerequisite: None

Students will be introduced to jewelry design and construction. Basic techniques such as annealing, soldering, sawing and polishing will be taught, as well as using a rolling mill, texturing, and finishing.  Students will also be introduced to basic forging and cold connections. 

Please join this class as well if you have taken Shannon's class before and you would like to continue to develop your skills.

Syllabus

Basic band

  • Using a torch
  • Sizing
  • Scribing
  • Measuring accurately
  • Annealing
  • Soldering
  • Finishing
  • Adding texture

Forged Bangle

  • Forging

Earring with texture and cold connections

  • Design earrings and add texture through the use of a rolling mill or other patterning tools
  • Design will incorporate the use of a cold connection to join parts of the design
  • Construct earring hooks

Supplies

There is an extra materials fee for copper sheet and wire, silver sheet, fine silver and wire, and a tool kit fee. Both are paid for at the time of registration and handed out at the first class.

$150 for tools:

  • Standard 3" sawframe
  • Plyers, flat nose
  • Plyers, round nose
  • Stainless Steel 6" & mm ruler
  • 1 dozen sawblades, Swiss #2/0
  • 1 dozen sawblades, Swiss #5/0
  • File half round ring 6 cut 2 + plastic file handle Grobet #4
  • Polishing sandpaper, various grits: 2 sheets of green, 2 of grey and 1 of blue 

$150 for metals:

  • 18g silver – 2 inch x 6 inches
  • 20g silver wire – 12 inches
  • 18g silver wire – 12 inches
  • 12g silver wire – 6 inches
  • 8g copper wire – 8 inches

If you have already done Metal Arts Essentials or Silversmithing I or have these tools already, you will not need the tool kit.

All students are also encouraged to bring any tools and materials they have.
