The Role of String Piano in Alexina Louie’s Programmatic “Memories in an Ancient Garden”

Abstract:
Canadian composer Alexina Louie makes use of extended piano techniques in several of her compositions. This lecture-recital focuses on her use of playing on the strings inside the piano as a means of creating an atmosphere which enhances the narrative accompanying the music. 

Biography:
Darcy Hildebrandt graduated with great distinction from the U of S with a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance in 2008. After several years of work, family life, and travel, she is back at the U of S working toward a Master's degree in Music Theory. She has performed with musicians around the globe and here in Saskatoon, including with the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra, the Saskatoon Opera, Greystone Singers, and many other choirs, ensembles, and soloists.
