Feeding thousands of striking miners, organizing movie nights, amateur drama groups and dance schools, while advocating for civil liberties, a national health care plan, and the pasteurization of milk: these were some of the activities that made miners’ unions viable, powerful forces in Canada in the 1940s & 50s. Carried out by the women who comprised the Women’s Auxiliaries – wives of the miners - these activities created a vibrant social life for all inhabitants of remote mining towns. The play, written by Jennifer Wynne Webber, dramatizes this honourable history of the Auxiliaries.
