Title: Conway's Topograph
Abstract: A topographic map yields a two-dimensional representation of a three-dimensional space. John Conway invented a notion of topograph that is useful for navigating the world of binary quadratic forms, and which renders a number of classical facts from number theory nearly obvious.
In this talk we'll introduce Conway's topograph and use it to chart a course through the fascinating world of the arithmetic of binary quadratic forms. We will only assume basic knowledge of polynomials, so that the talk should be accessible to all undergraduates.
We hope to see you all there!
