Scholarships and Awards

There are a variety of student awards, bursaries, and scholarships available for Department of Music students. Students are also eligible for general College of Arts and Science scholarships and awards, and are encouraged to apply for external awards in addition to those provided by the university.

Bursaries

The department of Music offers the following bursaries, open for application in the fall through the PAWS Scholarships and Bursaries channel with an annual deadline of November 30th. Selection is based on financial need.

Award Value: $1,000

  • Open to Music students who have been residents of Saskatchewan for two years prior to entering the music program.
  • Selection is based on academic achievement and financial need.

  • Open to entering and continuing Music majors with a focus on the double bass.
  • Selection is based on financial need.

Award Value: varies, approximately four awards of $1,700

  • Open to Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Music Education undergraduate students enrolled in Applied Studio Lessons who are completing either MUAP 143, 243, 343, or 443 in Term 1, and are enrolled in the corresponding MUAP 145, 245, 345, and 445 in Term 2. Both courses must be taken in the regular session. The bursary will be revoked should a recipient withdraw from a MUAP course in the academic year the bursary is awarded.
  • Selection is based on financial need. Preferential consideration will be given to students who have self-declared as Indigenous.

  • Open to entering or continuing students in the Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Music in Music Education, or Bachelor of Arts (Music) degree programs, with a preference to students majoring in piano or violin.
  • Selection is based on academic achievement and financial need.

Award Value: 2 awards of $500

  • Open to continuing students in the Bachelor of Arts (Music), Bachelor of Music, or Bachelor of Arts/Education in Music Education degree programs who has maintained a 70% average in the previous academic year and shows a minimum level of musical talent.
  • Selection is based on financial need.

  • Open to Music majors with a focus on honing applied music or compositional skills, who have completed one or more years of study and has achieved a minimum cumulative average of 75% and a minimum major average of 80%.
  • Selection is based on academic achievement and financial need.

Scholarships & Awards

The following awards in the Department of Music are based on academic achievement and/or musicianship, and do not require an application. Students will be informed of the recipients in late fall. 

Award Value: $1,000

  • Candidates must be entering the second year of their Bachelor of Music (B.Mus) or Bachelor of Education/Bachelor of Music (B.Ed/B.Mus(Mus.Ed)) program with their principal instrument being piano or organ. 
  • Selection is based on academic achievement

Award Value: $500

  • Open to continuing undergraduate students pursuing a B.Mus or B.Ed/B.Mus degree program, with preference given to students who are in a jazz ensemble. 
  • Selection is based upon musicianship and academic performance in a student's applied lesson and ensemble studies

  • Open to students entering their final year of study in an undergraduate degree program in either the B.Ed/B.Mus (MusEd) or B.Mus program
  • Selection will be made on the basis of academic achievement on all courses taken during the last regular session and/or performance ability as determined by the Award Committee

  • Open to Music students with the Department of Music participating in the Jazz Ensemble and a jazz combo

  • Awarded to the student showing the highest general ability on the basis of academic knowledge and practical performance as a musician

  • Offered annually to a third or fourth-year piano major.
  • To be eligible a student must have an average of 80% or above in year two or three of the program.

  • Open to students who have completed at least one year of studies toward either a Bachelor of Music Degree or Bachelor of Music in Music Education Degree. 
  • To be awarded to the most promising singer, as determined by the Award Committee.

  • Open to undergraduate students enrolled in any music degree program (B.MUS, B.ED/B.MUS, MUS.ED) or the B.A. degree with music as a major and to fulltime graduate students in any graduate program with a major music component at the University of Saskatchewan.

Award value: $1,000

  • Open to students who have completed at least one year of study towards a B.Ed./B.Mus.(Mus.Ed.) program, are in the elementary education or secondary education program, and who are majoring in instrumental education.
  • Selection will be based on academic achievement and demonstrated musicianship/musical ability.

  • Open to entering full-time first year students in a B.Mus or B.Mus(MusEd) program majoring in brass
  • Selection is based on performance achievement with some consideration of academic achievement

  • Open to students in the Master of Music Performance (piano or collaborative piano) degree program. When no MMus student is eligible, a third or fourth year music student whose principal instrument is piano will be considered. 
  • Selection is based on academic achievement

  • Awarded annually to a student who has completed a 300-level class in conducting and who has demonstrated potential as a conductor.

  1. University Band Scholarship: Open to full time students in the final year of the Bachelor of Music or Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree programs, whose majors are wind or percussion performance, and who are participating members of the University Wind Orchestra, Concert Band or Jazz Band.
  2. Conducting / Composition Scholarship: Open to full time students in the final year of the Bachelor of Music or Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree programs, whose majors are conducting or composition.
  3. Orchestra Scholarship: Open to full time students in the final year of the Bachelor of Music or Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree program, whose majors are wind, percussion or strings performance, who are participating members of the University Orchestra.

  • Awarded to a student who has completed the third year of either the B.Mus. or B.Ed./B.Mus.(Mus. Ed.) program. Selection will be based on academic achievement, evidence of outstanding service to the department, university and community, and leadership qualities.

  • Open to students entering or continuing studies in the B.Mus or B.Ed/B.Mus (Mus.Ed.) program. 
  • Selection will be based on abaility with low brass as demonstrated through an audition

  • Offered annually to a student in second or third year B.Ed/B.Mus (Mus.Ed) program for whom the saxophone is the major instrument

  • Offered annually to any undergraduate degree student who is a member of the Greystone Singers and is not pursuing a Bachelor of Music or Bachelor of Education/Bachelor of Music Education degree(s).
  • Selection will be based on academic achievement and vocal participation in the Greystone Singers.

Open to students who have been accepted into the Bachelor of Music program with an admission average above 75%

  • Open to undergraduate students enrolled in the College of Arts and Science who are entering a degree program in Music and have completed the Theory Placement Examination. 
  • Awarded to the student who receives the highest grade on the Theory Placement Examination

  • Open to a student in the B.Ed./B.Mus.(Mus.Ed.) program entering the third or fourth year of study. Preference will be given to a student entering the third year.
  • Selection will be based on achievement in the area of elementary classroom music as determined by the selection committee.

Award listing: Beverly Unverricht Scholarship in Music Education

Award value: varies

  • Offered annually to an outstanding student who is currently in third or fourth year in the B.Ed./B.Mus.(Mus.Ed.) program, whose major instrument is piano and who intends to study either as an undergraduate at the University of Saskatchewan or as a graduate student at any university during the next academic year, or who intends to set up a private studio during the next year.
  • Selection is based on academic achievement

Award listing: Marjorie Wilson Scholarship

  • Open to full-time students in the Bachelor of Music degree program
  • Vocal Music: Demonstrated special aptitude for vocal and choral music and teaching of the same.
  • Practical Instrumental Arranging: Demonstrated talent and achievement in practical instrumental arranging and orchestration, with particular reference to music education.

Travel Awards

Award Value: $2,500

  • Open to undergraduate and graduate students majoring in Music in the College of Arts & Science who are pursuing experiential learning opportunities related to their degree. Travel must occur within 12 months of the time the award is made. Evidence of travel will be required.
  • Selection is based on the merits of the submission.
