Exploring Oil Pastel: From Impression to Expression

Prerequisite: Intro to Oil Pastels or equivalent experience

This course is designed for those who have completed an introductory class or have some experience with oil pastel and wish to expand skill and confidence in this rich and dynamic medium. Students will explore colour layering, texture, underpainting, and mixed media integration, while developing preliminary planning processes, and refining mark-making approaches. Emphasis will be placed on experimentation and self-expression, while drawing from both observation and imagination.

Supplies

  • Montmartre Premium Extra Soft Oil Pastels, Vibrant Hues, set of 120 are highly recommended
  • 2 flat bright 1" synthetic bristle short handle paintbrushes
  • Small diamond or trowel shaped metal offset painting knife (palette knife)
  • Stonehenge Papers: 1 full sheet (22" x 30") each of Warm White 245gsm, Pearl Grey 245gsm, Kraft (brown) 245gsm, Black 245gsm. We will be dividing the full sheets into quarters and eighths as we progress through the class
  • Cardstock, white, 2 sheets
  • Small set of watercolour paints (hard pan is fine)
  • Prismacolor Premier coloured pencils: white, 10% cool grey, 90% french grey, black, sienna brown (other colours as desired)
  • Golden Pastel Ground acrylic medium (8 oz size)
  • Vegetable oil (1/2 a cup of cooking oil in a small leakproof container is fine)
  • Painter's (masking) tape
  • Stainless steel erasing shield with basic shapes and lines
  • Rags or paper towel
  • Scissors or small utility knife
  • Approx. 16" x 20" unmounted masonite board (hardboard)
  • Roll or sheet of glassine, parchment paper or wax paper
