Cyanotype Beginner Workshop

Learn to make gorgeous images using one of the earliest photographic techniques: cyanotype! Using natural materials, plants and the sun, students will make beautiful cyanotype prints on paper. We will learn how to collect plants that will result in crisp, stunning images, and discuss the keys to creating a successful composition. We will learn how to make the cyanotype emulsion, and techniques for coating, exposing and developing paper. Above all, we’ll get creative, learn a new skill, and have fun!
Syllabus
Day 1:
- Short introduction to cyanotype (history, basics)
- Show and tell of some plants and resulting images
- Gathering plants on campus (Laura will bring plants in case of rain)
- Coat paper
- Tips for creating compositions
- Create first cyanotype, expose, rinse, hang to dry
- Homework: gather a few plants for next day!
Day 2:
- Mini show and tell, getting ideas
- Coat more paper
- Make more cyanotypes
- Final show and tell
Supplies
Materials provided in class by instructor include:- Canson xl watercolor or SMLT Watercolour paper
- Arches Hot Press 9x12
- Jacquard Cyanotype Emulsion Kit
- Brushes
- 2 ½” hake brushes
- Hydrogen peroxide
- Rubber gloves
