College of Arts and Science alumni win Saskatchewan Book Awards

Five alumni of the College of Arts and Science at the University of Saskatchewan (USask) are among the winners of 2021 Saskatchewan Book Awards.

The awards, which recognize and celebrate Saskatchewan authors and publishers, were announced at on online ceremony on June 24.

With two awards, including book of the year, College of Arts and Science alumnus Randy Lundy (BA’94, MA’00) was the most decorated author of the event. For his book of poetry Field Notes for the Self (University of Regina Press), Lundy was presented with the Regina Public Library Book of the Year Award Honouring Mary Sutherland and the SK Arts Poetry Award Honouring Anne Szumigalski.

Shannon McConnell (MFA’17, MA’20) won the Ministry of Culture, Recreation, and Sport First Book Award for her book The Burden of Gravity (Caitlin Press).

Dr. Merle Massie (BA’93, MA’98, PhD’11), who works as USask’s coordinator of undergraduate research initiatives, received the University of Saskatchewan Non-Fiction Award for her book A Radiant Life: The Honourable Sylvia Fedoruk (University of Regina Press).

Leona Theis (BA’80, ARTS’87, MCTGED’91) won the Fiction Award for her novel If Sylvie Had Nine Lives (Freehand Books).

Dr. Daniel M. Beveridge (BSc’61, BA’62, MA’65, PhD) won the University of Regina Faculty of Arts/University of Saskatchewan College of Arts and Science Jennifer Welsh Scholarly Writing Award for The Red Road and Other Narratives of the Dakota Sioux (University of Nebraska Press). Beveridge edited the book, which was written by Samuel Mniyo and Robert Goodvoice.
