Department of Drama 75th Anniversary: Opening Event

The University of Saskatchewan (USask) Department of Drama is celebrating its 75th anniversary! Join us for a series of events and reminiscing by alumni, faculty and friends from June 1–19, 2021.

Department of Drama graduate Kim Coates (BA’81, Hon. DLitt’17) will be in conversation with Jeff Rogstad (BA’82, Arts’85) at the opening event.

Kim Coates has been a fixture on film and television screens for more than 30 years, appearing in more than 65 films, including Oscar winners Black Hawk Down and Pearl Harbor. The FX hit series Sons of Anarchy propelled Coates into the spotlight for his role as Tig Trager during its celebrated seven-year run. Recently, he wrapped up Seasons 1 & 2 of Bad Blood, starring as Declan Gardiner for Rogers Media Inc/Netflix. For season 2, Coates took home Best Performance by an Actor in a Continuing Leading Dramatic Role at the 2019 Canadian Screen Awards.

Recently released films include Coates’s good friend William Fichtner’s directorial debut, Cold Brook, as well as the Sony horror/thriller, Fantasy Island. Coates next appears in the independent feature films See For Me, and Neon Lights, and the upcoming Snapchat digital series Action Royale. With recent recurring roles in the Canadian police drama series Pretty Hard Cases, and the fifth season of the vampire-thriller series Van Helsing, Coates can be seen next as Frank Sturgis in the upcoming HBO series White House Plumbers.

Coates received his honorary Doctor of Letters degree from USask in 2017. In 2009, Coates was awarded an Alumni of Influence award from USask’s College of Arts and Science.

Jeff Rogstad is a news host, producer and CTV Saskatoon's weatherman. Rogstad was raised in Saskatchewan and graduated from the Department of Drama only a few years after Coates. As a professional actor,  Rogstad has performed with Persephone and 25th Street Theatres, Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan and is a member of The Saskatoon Soaps improv group. Now celebrating his 30th year in broadcasting, Rogstad joined CTV Saskatoon in 1997. Planet S voters have named Rogstad Best Weather Person every year since 2004.
