About this event

This year's Sorokin Lecture speaker is Dr. Valerie Steeves (PhD), a Criminology professor at the University of Ottawa.

As early and enthusiastic adopters of new technologies, young Canadians have been in the crucible of the new data-based economy. In this talk, Steeves draws on the findings of participatory action projects with youth to provide an overview of what this looks like from the child’s perspective.

Contrary to popular tropes that suggest that young people are willing to throw their privacy away for the pleasures of connectivity, our research suggests that they are nuanced and important critics of how the technical and legal frameworks that shape their online social interactions and education are constraining their rights and freedoms.
