About this event

A graduate of USask, Emeritus Professor Robert Calder taught in the Department of English for four-and-a-half decades. He is the author or editor of 12 books, one of which, Willie: The Life of W. Somerset Maugham, won the Governor General’s Literary Award For Non-Fiction. Considered by many to be the world’s leading authority on Maugham, Calder's book on the author’s film adaptations will be published next year by the University of Wisconsin Press.

Calder will discuss some of the problems that Maugham’s fiction presented and some of the lengths Hollywood would go to distort his stories. Using film clips, he will focus on Bette Davis’s stunning performance in Of Human Bondage, Greta Garbo’s incandescence in The Painted Veil and Bill Murray’s idiosyncratic interpretation of a visionary in The Razor’s Edge.
