Title

Next-generation optoelectronic sensors or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Magnetism

Abstract

Light can be turned into electricity (think solar panels), and electricity can be turned into light (like LEDs). This interchange between electronic and optical properties has many interesting applications, including as signal transduction and amplification elements in sensors. Solid-state sensors provide a compact module suitable for deployment in even very remote areas, because they have low power consumption and no moving parts. The keys to a successful sensor are high signal transduction and human-readable output. We also like to add in low cost and accessibility by lay users. In this presentation I will present our approach to device development and our latest work on magnetic SERS (surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy)-based sensors.
