Title

Polyaniline/Biopolymer Composites for Moisture Detection and Their Electromechanical Properties

Abstract

Current research aspires for pursuing novel hybrid composites comprised of polyaniline (and a second biopolymer component (chitosan CHT or cellulose CMP or carbon nanofibers CNF) The main emphasis is for PANI/CHT composites since these components exhibit the optimal properties in terms of their hygroscopic, electrical conductivity and mechanical properties The long term objective of this research is to fabricate sustainable moisture detection composites for humidity sensing.

The presence of polar functional groups OH and/or NH 2 of the biopolymers impart unique macroscopic properties for CHT over CMP, such as high mechanical stability under applied tension While hybrid PANI/CHT composites have attracted scientific attention for several decades, their chemical structures are not fully resolved Gaining insight on the type of chemical bonding between PANI and CHT is one of the goals of this work As well, to gain insight on their electrochemical and mechanical properties This study is a first example of a comprehensive characterization of PANI/CHT composites and an illustration of its use in moisture detection The successful development of PANI/biopolymer composites contributes to the field of humidity sensors due to the relatively simple, cost effective, and innovative design approach.
