Title: In Situ X-ray Absorption Spectroscopic Analysis of Nanoparticle Catalysts

X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is sensitive to the oxidation state and coordination environment of an element and places few constraints on the samples, and thus it is a useful technique for the characterization of metal nanoparticles with short-range order. With recent advances in XAS technology, it has now become possible to analyze materials under in situ conditions. As many synthesis and catalysis of nanoparticles occur in solution, we have employed in situ and ex situ XAS as a powerful technique to study the structures and speciation of nanoparticles under real operating conditions.

Fe@FexOy nanoparticles have been widely studied for environmental remediation or catalytic studies due to their cheap, relatively nontoxic and magnetic recovery advantages. With XAS, we have studied the oxidation mechanisms of Fe@FexOy nanoparticles, the formation of Fe@FexOy/Pd and core-void-shell Fe-Fe3O4/Pd bimetallic nanoparticles, and the speciation of these nanoparticles in catalytic reactions.
