Jessica Morgun - negAtive object apophAtic gesture

MFA exhibition

Event
How much can the absence of an art object say? Even banal objects can have some consequences. When objects go missing or lose their usefulness, there is a tangible loss - not only of the object itself, but of worlds that once existed. Letting the absence of an object speak fosters attentiveness to the plentitude of objects that populate our lives. The example of apophaticism is helpful in this respect. Apophaticism is a theological method that attempts to describe the divine through negation, through naming what it is not, or what is not known or cannot be known. It might seem a lofty term for a lowly object, but it is a vernacular sense of the apophatic I wish to access.
