This lecture will explore the Roman empress Livia's socially and politically potent visual image as communicated through coins. By examining coins from both Rome and the provinces, this paper offers a greater understanding of the power and influence embodied in LIvia's unique visual persona and the male-female gender-based ideologies of power early in the Julio-Claudian dynasty.
