Lecture: Livia as "Femina Princeps" and Her Exceptional Numismatic Accolades

The Classical, Medieval, and Renaissance Studies Colloquium Series presents Dr. Tracene Harvey (PhD), director and curator of the Museum of Antiquities at the University of Saskatchewan.

This lecture will explore the Roman empress Livia's socially and politically potent visual image as communicated through coins. By examining coins from both Rome and the provinces, this paper offers a greater understanding of the power and influence embodied in LIvia's unique visual persona and the male-female gender-based ideologies of power early in the Julio-Claudian dynasty.
