
Philosophy profs pick up prizes
Alward and Dieleman win CPA essay awards
Peter Alward, professor and head of the Department of Philosophy has been awarded the Canadian Philosophical Association's 2016 Tenured Professor Essay Prize. He will present his winning essay, entitled "Cliffhangers and Sequels: A Limited Defense of Authorial Intentions as Narrative Truth-makers,” at the Congress of Humanities and Social Sciences on May 31 in Calgary.
Alward’s research focuses on the philosophy of language and art. His book on the philosophy of fiction, Empty Revelations: An essay on talk about and attitudes toward fiction was published in 2012.
Alward's colleague Susan Dieleman, who recently joined the department as an assistant professor is a former winner of the CPA’s essay prizes. She won the Non-tenured Professor, Lecture, Sessional Essay Prize in 2014 with her essay, "Meeting Philosophy's Demographic Challenges.”
The Canadian Philosophical Association was founded in 1958 to promote philosophical scholarship and education across Canada, and to represent the interests of the profession in public forums.
