Video: Katherena Vermette’s My Writing Life lecture
The poet, novelist and author of The Break spoke on campus for the 2019 Arts and Science Book Club
Award-winning author Katherena Vermette spoke with students and community members on campus for the College of Arts and Science Book Club on March 18.
Vermette’s debut novel The Break was chosen as the official selection of the 2019 Arts and Science Book Club. She was invited to the University of Saskatchewan to discuss the book and her career as a writer at a series of events.
Vermette, a Métis writer from Winnipeg, Man., is the Governor General’s Award-winning author of poetry books including North End Love Songs and river woman. Her novel The Break was a bestseller in Canada and won multiple awards, including the 2017 Amazon.ca First Novel Award.
At the evening My Writing Life lecture at Convocation Hall—the Arts and Science Book Club’s annual capstone public event—Vermette read her poetry and discussed her writing process, her family history and her relationship with the land.
“What I try to do in every genre I write is I try to find truth and articulate my truth to the best of my ability. And sometimes that is very easy, and sometimes it is very, very difficult,” Vermette told the audience.
