Alexis Dahl says she is “grateful and happy” to have been chosen as the recipient of the University Staff Excellence Award.

“It is so great to have a supervisor and college team that is interested in putting in the time to create the nomination package—that was really award enough. Winning is great, but having the support of people I admire is worth so very much,” said Dahl.

“I can’t begin to express how grateful I am to work with such supportive leadership, and genuinely caring people,” she added.

The University Staff Excellence Award—formerly the President’s Service Award—is designed to recognize an exceptional contribution by a non-academic staff member who is currently working at the University of Saskatchewan. Dahl will receive the honour at Fall Convocation on Oct. 27.

Dahl began working at the U of S in 1999. She currently serves as the director of the Programs Office in the College of Arts and Science, a position she started on July 13, 2009.

In her current role, Dahl said she facilitates approval of all academic changes in the college, including supporting departments and college committees in determining how to construct program requirements within the rules set by the university and the college “to have students take what they feel is necessary to reach their goals.” She also supports the Academic Programs Committee, writes reports for Faculty Council and for university-level approval processes and attends university-level meetings as a college representative.

“The other main part of my job is ensuring that each of the Arts and Science programs, courses and academic policies is correctly listed in the Course and Program Catalogue. This requires reviewing any approved changes and helping departments and program chairs make updates,” said Dahl.

“I work closely with fantastic staff in the Registrar’s Office on this, who not only input the changes, but also check them against the rules and provide another check to ensure that what is in the catalogue makes sense for students, staff, parents, high school advisors and colleagues at other institutions.”

Dahl said she enjoys working in a college with so much variety, noting her days “are never boring.” She also enjoys working with faculty who are passionate about their teaching and research.

“The university has provided me with an ideal atmosphere to develop as an employee, and to grow as a person. I have had the opportunity to meet challenges, continually learn new things and be supported by wonderful colleagues, many of whom have become friends,” she said.

“I have had the opportunity to provide support to others, in the form of passing on information or experience, giving general guidance or by just lending an ear. I am grateful to have had the opportunities that have come my way, and look forward to being a part of the changes to come.”
