The Canadian Botanical Association has presented Professor Emeritus John Sheard (biology) with its highest award.

Sheard received the 2017 Lawson Medal at the association’s annual meeting in July. Presented once each year, the medal recognizes an outstanding contribution to botanical knowledge.

Sheard was chosen for the award on the basis of his landmark monograph The Lichen Genus Rinodina, published in 2010 during his time as a professor in the Department of Biology. The result of microscopic studies of thousands of lichen samples over more than 40 years, the monograph represents a lifetime of research and is the definitive scientific reference for the lichen species it describes.
