National recognition for sociologist's animal-assisted therapy work
Colleen Anne Dell (sociology) named to the Order of St. John for research and community contributions
Colleen Anne Dell, a professor of sociology and Centennial Enhancement Chair in One Health and Wellness, has been named a member of the Order of St. John.
In recognition of her research and community work involving animal-assisted interventions, Dell was admitted into the order on June 24 at a ceremony at the Senate of Canada in Ottawa.
Dell travels regularly with her three St. John Ambulance registered therapy dogs to the university, to addictions treatment facilities and to criminal justice institutions to study how interactions with animals can improve human wellness.
The Order of St. John—also known by its full name, the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem—is part of the Canadian Honours System that also includes the Order of Canada and the Order of Merit. It recognizes devoted humanitarian service carried out by individuals working with St. John Ambulance in Canada.
