About this event

How does music reflect the natural world, and how can composing become an ecological gesture? In this talk, I will unpack Restless World Anew, my concerto for string quartet and orchestra that explores the intersections between nature, tradition and the creative process.

About the artist

Dr. Roydon Tse (DMA) is a composer and educator who seeks to communicate to audiences from all backgrounds with music that reflects our lived experiences, inspired by the challenges posed by climate change, the complexities of grief, and the ever-evolving cultural tapestry of our world.

His music – for orchestral, vocal and chamber forces – has been commissioned & performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Brussels Philharmonic, Esprit Orchestra, Tafelmusik, the Atlanta Opera, Verona Quartet, & members of the Minnesota, Paris Opera, Canadian Opera, and La Scala Orchestras, among others.

Named one of CBC Music’s “Top 30 under 30” musicians, Dr. Tse has won multiple awards, including seven SOCAN Foundation Awards for Young Composers, the Washington International Composition Prize, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta’s Emerging Artist Award, iSing! International Composition Prize, and the Johanna Metcalf Performing Arts Prize.

Born in Hong Kong, Dr. Tse holds undergraduate and master's degrees in music from the University of British Columbia and the University of Toronto and completed his DMA in Composition at the University of Toronto.
