Workshop: Introduction to Jupyter

Learn about Jupyter, an application that allows you to create and share documents that contain live code, equations, visualizations and explanatory text

Event

Introduction to Jupyter Workshop
Please join us at this unique opportunity to learn how to use Jupyter taught by Michael Lamoureux (Department of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Calgary).

When: Tuesday, June 6, 2:00– 3:00 pm
Where
: ARTS 146
Who should attend
: any researcher who needs access to advanced computational tools for their work.
What to bring
: a laptop with internet browser such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox

About the workshop:
The Jupyter Notebook is an open-source application created by scientific researchers to address challenges in combining text, math formulas, data and code. The resulting computational notebook allows you to create and share documents that contain live code, equations, visualizations and explanatory text.

This hands-on workshop offers an introduction to the Jupyter notebook and the syzygy.ca online service, which is available to anyone with a University of Saskatchewan login. Using the tools in Julia, Scientific Python, and R, we will demonstrate a few basics, including:

  • how to access syzygy.ca
  • plot data and graphics
  • create formatted text and math formulas
  • run simple statistical analysis

We will also demonstrate more complex computational methods, such as:

  • solving linear algebra problems
  • numerical partial differential equations
  • interactive graphics
  • data analysis

Please note: University of Saskatchewan students, faculty and staff may access the usask.syzygy.ca service using their university login credentials. Other participants must have a Google account (e.g. gmail) in order to access the pims.syzygy.ca online services.

For more information, please contact: Chris Soteros, PIMS site director and professor at soteros@math.usask.ca
