Research

Animal Physiology Environmental Toxicology Impacts of Industrial Metal Pollution Metal Bioavailabilty and Toxicity Neurobehaviour Physiology of Metal Uptake and Homeostasis

The overall objective of my research program is to study the fundamental mechanisms by which environmental contaminants cause adverse physiological and neuro-behavioural effects in organisms during environmentally relevant chronic exposure. A comprehensive understanding of how contaminant exposures infleunce the physiology, behaviour and homeostasis of aquatic organisms at various life stages is required to develop reliable approaches/tools for risk assessments of contaminants in the environment. Moreover, many contaminants induce adverse effects in exposed organisms that are inherited across multiple generations and thus can endanger their long-term sustenance, yet the  epigenetic mechanisms underlying these transgenerational effects remain mostly unknown. My research addresses these issues using multidisciplinary approaches and integrates organismic physiology, developmental biology, behavioural ecology, biochemistry, molecular biology, and epigenetics.
