Animal Physiology Environmental Toxicology Impacts of Industrial Metal Pollution Metal Bioavailabilty and Toxicity Physiology of Metal Uptake and Homeostasis

The overall objective of my research program is to study the fundamental mechanisms by which trace metals cause adverse physiological and neuro-behavioural effects in aninals, especially fish, during environmentally relevant chronic exposure. Anthropogenic activities have led to elevated concentrations of trace metals in natural environments with adverse consequences for life. A comprehensive understanding of the physiology of metal accumulation, homeostasis, and toxicity in animals, and their interplay with other environmental factors is required to develop approaches/tools for risk assessments of metals in the environment. With that in mind, my goal is to investigate the complex relationships among metal speciation, uptake, metabolism, accumulation and toxicity in metal-exposed animals. While the starting point is always basic mechanistic physiology, my research is multidisciplinary in nature and integrates organismic physiology, biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, behavioural ecology and geochemistry to address these issues.
