At present she is co-editor of Palaios, in addition to being a member of the editorial board of a number of journals, including Journal of Paleontology, Paleontologia Electronica, Palaeogeography Palaeoclimatology Palaeocology, Ameghiniana, and Revista Brasilera de Paleontologia. Gabriela is a member of the Scientific Board of the UNESCO International Geoscience Program (IGCP), member of the SEPM Board, and Treasurer of the International Ichnological Association. Gabriela is the recipient of the 2018 Association of Women Geoscientists Outstanding Educator Award. She is the author of five books, has edited three special publications, and is the author of approximately 170 scientific papers. Gabriela has supervised over fifteen graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.

* Ichnology of ancient tidal flats and marginal-marine environments: Tidal flats witnessed first-order evolutionary events, representing complex ecosystems where many evolutionary innovations might have taken place. Additionally, an integrated ichnologic and sedimentologic model for tide-influenced shorelines has been developed. This project started several years ago while working on Carboniferous tidal flats in the American Midcontinent and in the last couple of years I have extended its temporal range to include Lower Paleozoic (NW Argentina) and Neogene (
* Ichnology of Lower Paleozoic ecosystems and implications in Evolutionary Paleoecology: I have actively taken part in IGCP 410-The Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event, the final result of which is a book published by Columbia University Press. A chapter on the ichnologic record of the Ordovician radiation co-authored by
* Continental Ichnofacies in space and time: This line of research was begun during the 1990s to attempt a critical re-evaluation of the continental Scoyenia ichnofacies. As a result, several nonmarine ichnofacies have since been proposed, including the permanently subaqueous Mermia ichnofacies, and more recently the palaeosol ichnofacies (e.g. Coprinisphaera ichnofacies). Trace fossils also record early evidence for the invasion of land and ecospace utilization in terrestrial environments. In the early 1990s I published the first available database documenting the distribution pattern of continental trace fossils in collaboration with
* Paleobiology and autoecology of trace fossils: This line of research deals with the mode of construction and ethologic interpretation of selected trace fossils. It has implications in paleoecological studies because our understanding of the behavior of extinct groups is mediated in many cases by the study of biogenic structures. It also has implications in ichnotaxonomy because an appropriate understanding of functional morphology is relevant to naming ichnotaxa (i.e. ichnotaxonomic classification is morphoethologic).
