Trish Monture Centre for Student Success opens

At a special event on Nov. 24, the College of Arts & Science celebrated the official naming of the Trish Monture Centre for Student Success.

Trish Monture (1958-2010)

The centre is a substantially renovated and expanded version of the former Aboriginal Student Achievement Office named for Patricia Monture, a former faculty member in the Department of Sociology.

The Trish Monture Centre (Arts 250) will serve as a meeting place, study space and advising centre for students in both the Aboriginal Student Achievement Program and the Transition Program.

Trish Monture (1958-2010) was a powerful Mohawk woman, an accomplished scholar, writer and activist, a loving mother, and a highly respected faculty member in the College of Arts & Science.

The centre's Nov. 24 naming celebration featured reflections on Monture's life from her friends, family and colleagues. Dean Peter Stoicheff added that the Trish Monture Centre is one more step along the college and the university’s path to being a respectful, welcoming place for Aboriginal students.
