Literature Matters presents:
Harry Potter: The Collaborative Creation of a Global Phenomenon

A talk by Jillian Baker, Department of English

When: Wednesday, April 19 at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Social Hall, Grace-Westminster United Church, 505 10th Street East

While the world that Harry Potter inhabits was the product of one mind alone, it took an army to turn it into the worldwide sensation it has become. Over the course of the series’ rise to success, the manuscripts created by J.K Rowling passed through the hands of hundreds of editors, translators, visual artists, and publishers before reaching the average bookshelf. The transformation of what was once considered a mere children’s book into a global phenomenon and multifaceted industry was largely built upon the tireless efforts of those who remain, to this day, the unsung heroes of the series. Join us for this talk as we delve into the sordid world of top-secret editing, grassroots translations, the expansion of the global vocabulary, and even black markets around the world, all equally and uniquely driven by The Boy Who Lived.
