About this event

The 52nd Annual Sorokin Lecturer will be Dr. Vic Satzewich, McMaster University, presenting the talk, "The Immigration Industry in Canada: The Role of Profit and Non-Profit Third Parties in Facilitating Immigration."

Migration is of course structured by broad macro-level considerations related to patterns of global inequality, political developments and crises, and environmental disasters, as well as individual and family decisions.  But this is not the whole story about how people migrate.  In many cases, third party intermediaries play a critical role in the migration process.  Though it is a contested term, my lecture will try to map out some of the main actors that constitute the ‘immigration industry’ in Canada.  Satzewich will draw out some of the implications associated with how these actors make immigration to Canada happen.
