Chemistry Weekly Seminar - Allan East, University of Regina
Allan East, Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of Regina, will present a seminar at 1:30 pm in Thorvaldson 159.
Title
Phosphorus K-edge X-ray Absorption Spectra, and Debye-Huckel Theory
Abstract
This will be two talks in one. First, a ~20 minute historical talk celebrating the 100th anniversary of Debye-Huckel theory (ionic activity in solution) -- its famous derivation, why Arrhenius didn't like it, and why it breaks down when solutions are too concentrated. Second, the main topic, a ~30 minute research talk on my newest research project, Phosphorus K-edge X-ray Absorption Spectra, a collaboration with Dr. Sterenberg (Regina) and Dr. Pushie (U. Saskatchewan), in which we have used quantum chemistry spectrum predictions to help with peak assignment in experimental spectra of 4-coordinate phosphorus compounds. The compounds include phosphonium ions, polyphosphates, and tungsten-phosphine complexes.
