Chemistry Weekly Seminar - Rohith Gopala Krishnan, PhD Student
Rohith Gopala Krishnan, PhD student in the Department of Chemistry, University of Saskatchewan, will present a seminar at 1:30 pm in Thorvaldson 159.
Title
Studies Towards the Synthesis of Antiaromatic [12] and [16]Annulenes
Abstract
From the time the first higher annulene had been synthesized, it was reported that [12]annulene is an unstable compound. While dehydrobenzo[12]annulenes have been synthesized and studied, synthesis of [12]annulene has been unsuccessful.
In 1996 Schleyer proposed that fused cyclopropenes can impose planarity on a previously non-planar [10]annulene. It was hypothesized that a similar planarizing effect would be observed for fused cyclopropanes on all-cis [12]annulenes.
As very little is known regarding the properties and reactivity of such nominally anti-aromatic structures, their successful synthesis would answer fundamental questions about conjugated π systems.
The focus of this seminar will be on the efficient synthesis of a 12-membered ring, attempts at a stereoselective cyclization towards 12-memberd rings and the evolution of a simple synthetic strategy towards the synthesis of a 16-membered ring which after further functional group interconversion can become a dehydro[16]annulene, a Hückel anti-aromatic system.
