A select group of popular authors, including Charles Dickens and Hayao Miyazaki, have not been content to let others adapt their stories into new media. They have chosen to do it themselves. This talk considers the difficulty of self-adaptation, these authors’ motivations, and why we are so eager to retell our favourite stories in new formats.
