A talk by Kandice Sharren, faculty member in the Department of English

When Sense and Sensibility was published in 1811, Jane Austen had been trying and failing to see a novel into print for at least 14 years. This talk considers the four publishers Austen interacted with during her lifetime. It places Austen's dealings with them in the context of the other women writers they published, in order to explore how women in the early 19^th century navigated the literary marketplace and how Austen's genteel fiction was only one of many options open to them.
