Opera, As In: Writing One

A Department of Music FARLS talk by Kendra Harder, Michelle Telford and Jennifer Szeto

Saskatoon composer and librettist duo Kendra Harder and Michelle K. Telford, along with pianist Jennifer Szeto, artistic director of Montreal’s Musique 3 Femmes (M3F), will form a digital panel and regale you with their experiences creating opera – from writing, workshopping, and copious amounts of editing, to performance.

Harder and Telford are former winners of M3F’s Prix 3 Femmes, a national award for supporting new operas by emerging female composers and librettists. Through this prize, they were able to work with Szeto on their second comic opera, Book of Faces. Harder and Telford are presently working on their third collaboration, Orpheus & Eurydice: Nox, which will be workshopped with vocal students and alumni of the University of Saskatchewan in Spring 2022.

Inspired as tribute to those lost in the 2016 Orlando Pulse nightclub shooting, Nox is a queer retelling of the Orpheus myth, lifting up the voices of queer women, and shining a light on love. It also explores how homophobia and misogyny play out as violence against women in the 2SLGBTQ+ community.
