Passionate English Diction

A Fine Arts Research Lecture Series (FARLS) talk by Dr. Elroy Friesen (DMA) with the Greystone Singers

Choirs and singers often struggle to get English “off the page” in a natural, unaffected manner. Understanding and embracing the inherent characteristics of English is key to clear expression of the text. This lecture will examine where English lies in the context of Romance and Germanic languages. Clear comparisons and contrasts between languages and careful examination of how we actually “speak” English, will provide a useful set of tools for singers in ensemble and solo settings of all musical styles.
