The Search Committee for the Vice-Dean Academic invites faculty, staff, and students to view the public presentations of the two candidates shortlisted for this position. Each candidate will discuss their vision for the role of Vice-Dean Academic, College of Arts and Science for approximately 20 minutes, followed by an opportunity to ask questions.
If you are unable to attend in person, each presentation will be recorded and will be made available following the second presentation.
You are also invited to submit written feedback on the candidates. All responses will be held in confidence and shared only with the search committee. Please submit comments by 8:30 am on Monday, Feb. 1 to dean.artsandscience@usask.ca.
Dr. Alec Aitken's biography:
Alec Aitken received his BSc double honours (biology/geography) and his MSc (coastal geomorphology and marine biology) from Queen’s University, followed by his PhD (quaternary geology and invertebrate palaeontology) from McMaster University. He received an NSERC postdoctoral fellowship to pursue research in Arctic marine geology and marine ecology at Queen’s University. Aitken joined the Department of Geography at the University of Saskatchewan as an assistant professor in 1992. He was later promoted to associate professor (1994), earned tenure (1996) and was promoted to professor (2009). He served as acting department head for the Department of Geography and Planning on two separate occasions (once for a year and a second time for a six-month term). Aitken is currently serving as the department’s head, a role he has held since July 2019. He holds associate memberships in the departments of biology and archaeology and anthropology. Aitken's research and scholarship explores the marine geology and marine ecology of the Canadian Arctic continental shelf. He is the recipient of a USSU Teaching Excellence Award, a College of Arts and Science Teaching Excellence Award, and the University of Saskatchewan Master Teacher Award. He is honoured to be nominated and recognized as an Indigenous ally at the University of Saskatchewan.
