ENG 207.3: Decolonizing Literatures

From London to Lagos, Mumbai to Manila, Singapore to Vancouver, colonial and postcolonial cities have long been contact zones where the processes of exploitation and exchange have been amplified. This course will read decolonizing literatures that are set in these cities, examining how imperial languages, power structures, and spaces have been critiqued and hybridized.

Joanne Leow
Assistant Professor Joanne Leow joined the Department of English in 2016. Her interdisciplinary research focuses on urbanism, cartography and Asian and Asian-North American literature.

ENG 383.3: Rereading Colonialism

Beginning with Joseph Conrad's controversial Heart of Darkness, this course will trace the heights and limits of colonial power through literary texts from around the world. We will read a range of theories and genres to explore colonial discourse and related terms like decolonization and postcolonialism.
