Li Wan: always open halfway through

The world we live in, whether geographical or human, is composed of myriad details, and forms itself as an endless and seemingly disorderly series of opportunities. For me, art is a description and a re-valuation of the world. I insert my artworks into the world as a symbiotic contribution to a dynamic ecology of collective understanding. My work starts from the ‘specific.’ It is expressed plainly. I deploy randomness and re-ordered notions of time and space in order to radiate warmth and light. –Li Wan

Li Wan is a teacher in the sculpture department at the Hubei Institute of Fine Arts (Wuhan, China). Her research focuses on sculpture and public art. She has been involved with many public art projects and has participated in various residencies of academic and social orientation. She has been a visiting artist at the University of Saskatchewan for close to a year, producing new work in the sculpture lab that she will install in the Gordon Snelgrove Gallery.

The exhibition title is taken from Wislawa Szymborska’s poem “Love at First Sight.”
