Starting with a painted version of her family’s only complete group portrait, Shanyse Wehner was struck by how little she knew of her brothers and sisters. At least 10 years younger than her next-oldest sibling, her lack of awareness comes as no surprise. Nevertheless, the handicap did nothing to soothe her desire to know more. The paintings in this exhibition draw from a collection of domestic photographs from before she could remember. Formally, the results are a testament to the artist’s obvious aptitude for portraiture, but on a psychic plane Family Matters is a meditation on the inevitable inscrutability of familial relations.
