A Community Conversation on the Treatment of Cindy Gladue & Violence Against Indigenous Women

Sept. 25, 2018
Station 20 West, Multipurpose Room
Doors open at 5:30 pm

Join us on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2018, for soup and bannock followed by coffee and a community conversation on violence against Indigenous women in Canada's criminal justice system and the treatment of Cindy Gladue, who died in 2011 after she was brutally stabbed.

Cindy Gladue was born in Athabasca in 1974 and raised in Calling Lake until she moved to Edmonton, Alta. Her mom describes her as "a lot like you and I. She loved life, she had a family, dreams, emotions. She was kind, caring and funny. She was a beautiful woman inside and out and she was loved deeply."

The individual arrested in Gladue's death was acquitted. After the verdict, rallies across the country demanded justice and the acquittal was successfully appealed. However, a re-trial was never held. The accused appealed his case to the Supreme Court of Canada and the hearing will be held on Oct. 11, 2018.

This event is being held in honour of Cindy and her family. In response to this gathering, solidarity events are also being held across the country in Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver and more.
