Anna Magnani, one of Italian cinema’s greatest actresses, is Mamma Roma, a prostitute who tries to escape her past for the sake of her son. In the spirit of Italian Neorealism, Mamma Roma is an unflinching look at the struggle for survival in postwar Italy, and highlights controversial director Pier Paolo Pasolini’s fascination with the marginalized and dispossessed. Banned when released, the film is now a classic.
