The Day Edward Said Became Political with Maurice Jr. Labelle

June 7th, 1967. Israeli troops conquered East Jerusalem, delivering a coup de grâce to their Arab nemeses and ending the third Arab-Israeli War—also known as the Six Day War. The Middle East would never be the same. And neither would the mindsets of myriad Indigenous Palestinians, Israelis, and Arabs, among others across the globe. Indeed, the “thunderbolt” that was Israel’s controversial unification of West and East Jerusalem had lasting effects, including on the now world-renowned scholar Edward Said. It led the then 31-year-old Palestinian- American intellectual to become politically active in the causes of the Palestinian liberation movement, U.S.-Middle East relations, decolonization in the world and inter-cultural affairs more broadly. This talk explores how the Six Day War transformed Edward Said, and how he in turn transformed the world.
