A novel dedicated to the late professor of biology R. Jan F. Smith has won this year’s Aurora award for Best English Novel. A Play of Shadow (published by DAW books) was by written Julie E. Czerneda, who did her graduate studies in biology at the University of Saskatchewan.

An award-winning science fiction and fantasy author, Czerneda visited campus on Sept. 21 to present a talk to students about her writing career and how she turned her love of biology into fiction.

For 35 years the Aurora awards have been given out for Canadian literary and fan works that members of the Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Association (CSFFA) feel are exceptional. This year the awards ceremony was held in Toronto on Nov. 22. A total of eleven awards were given out.
