About this event
This lecture will be presented by Isabelle Côté, associate professor in the Department of Political Science at Memorial University of Newfoundland.
Opposition to internal migration is a phenomenon observed across diverse political systems and geographical contexts. Yet, despite its prevalence and significant social and political implications, scholarship on internal migration remains limited—particularly when compared to the vast literature on international migration.
This presentation addresses that gap by examining the role of nativism in shaping responses to internal migration in Canada. Isabelle Côté will begin by situating opposition to internal migration within broader theoretical debates on nativism and migration politics.
Côté will then outline the political and institutional contexts in which such opposition emerges. Finally, Côté will share preliminary findings from a recent survey that explores the conditions under which opposition to internal migration arises in Canada.
