About this event
A talk by Brad Kirbyson, President, Winnipeg Branch, Canadian International Council
The prospect of U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods and a potential trade war have dominated the headlines in Canada this year. Tariffs would have a negative impact on Canada's economy and they can ultimately even pose challenges to our sovereignty. Trump has postponed implementing most of the tariffs to April 1, but what can we expect then? Will Canada get a further reprieve or will we finally find ourselves in the trade war we have been dreading? Guest speaker Brad Kirbyson will give us the background on tariffs and the threat posed by these specific tariffs. He will also share some good news about how Canada can not only survive tariffs, but seize the opportunity presented by the tariff threat to lay the groundwork for future prosperity.
Brad Kirbyson has served on the executive of the Winnipeg Branch of the Canadian International Council since 2013, and as Branch President from 2014 to 2020 and 2023 to present. He served as the Political/Economic Specialist at the U.S. Consulate in Winnipeg from 2001 to 2022. Prior to joining the consulate, Mr.Kirbyson had experience working at all three levels of government in Canada. He served as a Policy Analyst with the Association of Manitoba Municipalities, worked at the Manitoba Legislature, and worked for a Member of Parliament and a federal Minister of Agriculture. He has received several awards for his service to the United States Government, including a Franklin Award for his work during an eight-month temporary assignment at U.S Embassy Baghdad in 2008-9.
The Global Café series is hosted by the Department of Political Studies.
