Why Writing is Like Death (in early medieval England)

What do some chatty inanimate objects, an Old English poem in Italy, a stone memorial in Scotland, a fictional sword hilt, and a poem by Robert Browning have in common? They presuppose a metaphorical equivalence of writing with death, an idea I will explore with respect to various texts and textual objects mostly from early medieval England. We’ll also consider the implications of this idea for us – not as writers, but as readers.
