Joey (Xiaoying) Zhuang “Marketing in the Music Industry”

Marketing strategies and tools are essential for all musicians no matter whichever area in music they decide to go in - music education, performance, arts administration, etc. They need to find work and they need to know how to sell themselves.

This lecture will explore business practices of the music industry and focus on preparing a package for self-marketing. Participants should finish the lecture with a concept of how to develop their own robust, ready-to-use set of publicity materials, with the hopes that they can seizes opportunities when they are presented.

Objectives:

- The importance of a professional profile

- Self-evaluation of chosen career path, and skills and habits needed to succeed. Define practical and business priorities and what one could be doing to help realize them. I.e. financial, marketing/self-promotion, recording demos, networking, comfortable interpersonal dynamics.

- What and How to create a professional packet - Resume, CV, Bio (different lengths), elevator pitch, photos/head-shots, repertoire lists, cover letters, letterhead template introduction to electronic versions of these documents. (slightly different for instrumentals and singers)

- Digital Marketing: Website, Social Media Page

- Teaching Lessons: Studio policies

- Written and spoken communication with employers, other artists, conductors,   students/parents, organizations.

Joey Zhuang is a Chinese flutist and piccoloist, who finds joy in engaging with a multitude of musical styles. Recent highlights include Principal Flute position with Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra (2023-24), invited performance with Strata Festival, and fellowship with the Orchestra of the America. She has performed in Canada, China, Scotland and the United States, from chamber music to world premieres.

Passionate about music education, Joey collaborates with diverse learners as a teacher in her own studio, and has taught in various institutions in Canada including University of Saskatchewan and University of Toronto.

Joey holds a Masters degree at Northwestern University in Chicago with full scholarship while being a member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association.
