An Evening of Song In Memory of Dorothy Howard
An Evening of Song In Memory of Dorothy Howard
Presented by her Former Students, Friends, and Family
Time: Sunday, October 27, 2013, 7:30 p.m.
Location: Convocation Hall, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon
Dorothy Howard taught in the Department of Music at the University of Saskatchewan from 1969 – 1994. Over twenty-‐five years, she developed a thriving vocal program at the U of S, and made lasting connections with her students and the community. She was honoured with the highly prestigious Master Teacher Award in 1991, and made a Professor Emerita upon her retirement. Dorothy passed away this past March. Her former students, friends and family are gathering together to celebrate her life and legacy at the university she loved so well.
Former student Kerry-Anne Kutz, now based in Montreal, will be the emcee for the evening. Kerry-Anne will sing a work recently written for her by Vancouver composer, Denis Bédard. Saskatchewan-based singers Janice Paterson, Chris Kelly, Gaye-Lynn Kern, Louella Friesen, Larry Klopoushak, Gary Day, and Jeanine Hatchard will perform a range of songs from Handel to Rodrigo.
Two of Dorothy’s grandchildren will also take the stage: 17-year old singer Elena Howard-Scott and her brother, 20-year old Zander, now studying cello at McGill. Zander will play the Fauré Elégie with one of the evening’s collaborative pianists, Bonnie Nicholson. Dianne Gryba and Karen Reynaud will also contribute their accompanying skills to the evening.
The Dorothy Howard Scholarship Fund was established at the time of Dorothy’s retirement in 1994. Each year, the fund supports a promising young singer in the Department of Music. Donations at the door will go to the scholarship fund; the current holder, Tricia Florence, will sing at the concert.
We invite all those who knew Dorothy to come and celebrate her memory.
