A Paralympic star has been elevated and Saskatchewan's first female minister of finance has been named in Order of Canada appointments.
Arnold Boldt, already a member of the Order, was one of 28 people elevated to the rank of officer in a list released by the Governor general's office Sunday.
Janice MacKinnon, now a prominent academic and commentator who served as Saskatchewan finance minister and several other portfolios between 1991 and 2003, was appointed a member along with 36 others.
Recipients are cited for their lifetime of merit and achievement, "especially in service to Canada or to humanity at large."
Boldt, 55, was born in Osler and lost his right leg in a farm accident at age three. In 1976, he set world records in the Paralympic high jump and long jump. His athletic career continued this past summer when he competed for Canada in cycling at the London Paralympic Games.
"What I put it down to is that high-jumping with one leg somehow or other captured everybody's imagination," Boldt said earlier this year. "It was like, 'Oh my God.' Kids remember me, adults remember me. There's just something about going over the bar with one leg."
MacKinnon currently works as a professor of history at the University of Saskatchewan and sits on the boards of various policy organizations.
Her first budget as finance minister in 1993, like those for the next several years, focused on deficit reduction.
One of Sunday's recipients, former prime minister Paul Martin, was appointed to the highest rank of companion.
Two members of Canada's 1972 Summit Series hockey team were also named to the Order of Canada.
Ken Dryden was named an officer and Paul Henderson a member.
Governor General David Johnston announced a total of 91 new appointments to the order.
